The highest card in the deck is the kicker. This card is the highest ranking card remaining in the deck in a high-card hand. When two or more of the same rank are matched, the high card breaks ties. For example, when Charley has three kings and one pair of kings, he is probably trying to get a straight. But he can’t beat Brad’s straight flush!
One of the most interesting aspects of poker is betting. Each player bets into a pot in the middle of the table. If a bet does not go through, then the player who placed it is said to have folded. Sometimes, players who fold lose the right to compete in the pot.
In the next round, the dealer’s turn is passed from player to player. In the first round of betting, the player to the left of the big blind is the first to act. He has the right to raise or check. During the subsequent rounds, the small blind acts first.
The pot is the ultimate reward, and is the aggregate of all the bets made by all the players in one deal. To win the pot, a player must match the bet made by the previous bettor.
There are many poker variants, and each requires a different set of rules. However, in most cases, the rules of the game are fairly similar. Generally, a player must bet at least the minimum amount in the first betting interval and a player can check or raise in the later ones. As such, the rule of thumb is to bet at least the ante in a fixed-limit game.
